The Good

Val is a good talker, always agrees to what his clients want and it is for sure that the service packages he offers are cheaper than the latest price trends in the market.

The Bad

You get what you pay for. Cheap service for cheap price.
- The photo gallery he was so proud of is the pre-nup pics printed on photo paper pasted on illustration boards. I can do something better.
- The Thank You cards that he promised were handed out on the wedding day, when we asked him to provide them beforehand so we can use them as gift tags.
- Not to mention that he is not so creative when we were shooting the wedding entrance video that I have to show him a draft of my ideas before we were able to make a story out of the shoot.
- He also used a different (slow) version of the song for the SDE video.
- The videographers that worked with Val does not care about the details of the subject, and I mean they do not have an eye for the little details. There is a portion of the SDE that my hubby’s bowtie was up his neck and the man shooting that video did not even bothered to tell Marc to fix his bowtie. Watch the SDE video above and slide to 1:15 and see how nasty the bowtie was but the videographer kept shooting anyway, without saying a word to Marc.
- When he used the correct (rock) version of the song, the motion of the edited SDE video was too fast that my relatives complained that they get headaches from watching it. Then there’s more. Read The Ugly.

The Ugly

1. Unprofessional attitude for a ‘professional wedding videographer’.

His team was late to arrive on the wedding day, when they showed up at around 6am and it was Val himself who said that their call time was 5am. The suppliers who arrived before them said to me that Val did not even introduced himself to the other suppliers, and just barged in to the house without even saying hi to me or to the people who were already there. I was kind of expecting that somehow he will be nice to say hi since he already knows the we got different vendors for the video and photo, so it should not be hard building rapport among them so they can both produce great photos and videos. And I think I know who the hardest supplier to get along with was. All of the suppliers greeted me with a big smile when they arrived as early as 4am, but it was only Val’s team who I did not even get their names because they never introduced themselves. They were not smiling during the shoot, and I bet they don’t even know my name (except for Val, of course). I could also notice the arrogance exuding from Val during the shoot, as he is not as jolly as the photographers. He was just barking directions all over the place instead of just being nice and doing so politely.

2. Unorganized and kept clashing with the photographers.

During the preps shoot, Marc and I kept repeating the same poses at least twice a few minutes after we are done (i.e. I’m sitting on a bench, photographer then asked me to stand up and walk, Val interrupts and asks me to sit on the bench again. Then asks me to stand up and walk.) I can feel the tension that time but I prefer to smile because I won’t let anyone rain on my parade, or we can say, wedding. Val could have asked the photographers to hold the next pose so he can shoot, but no. He kept interrupting the shoot and we kept repeating the poses so that he could get his shot that should have been taken a few minutes before. If he could have just introduced himself to the people he’s going to work with, then it should not be hard for him to communicate with the other suppliers.

The pre-nup shoot was sort of a failure also because he does not have any idea how correlate our costumes together with our theme. He made me do those awkward poses that does not fit into our theme, nor does not look like it will pass for a magazine editorial. All shots were taken far away that the people who saw our guestbook say that they don’t recognize us in the photos because most of our faces are hidden.

3. Delinquent with deadlines.

This is the single most hated attitude brides like me don’t want to see in a vendor. And Val should be given the gold medal for being the most delinquent supplier we ever booked. He did our pre-nup shoot so it was expected that we will get our photos before the wedding day, hence the name pre-nuptial shoot. I texted him asking for the edited pre-nup photos because I need at least one to use for our photo booth and I believe that he promised to provide them before the wedding. He replied saying that we will get the edited photos during the wedding, not before. So I panicked and since I somehow know who to Photoshop photos, I just asked him to provide the RAW instead. So we drove all the way to the place he’d want us to meet (Cash and Carry Makati coming from Ortigas, and it’s a long drive since we’re from Mandaluyong). I can’t say no to the meeting place considering that we were already in Ortigas that time but had to drive from Mandaluyong to Makati then back to Mandaluyong again because that was four days before the wedding and we don’t have any pre-nup photos to use. Big hassle.

When we got the photos, I knew it was time to book a separate photographer. Every single usable photo is in need of serious editing. We can only be recognized in a few selected shots, which is difficult because we need a close-up shot for the photo booth layout. This must be the reason why Val needs so much time editing the photos. Good thing I was able to convince my husband that we should prioritize photographers rather than videographers and to stretch the budget so we can book a better photographer, or else our memories are at the mercy of this sorry vendor.

Another delayed delivery is the DVD’s of the full wedding coverage. This one needs a long story-telling so please bear with me.

Part 1.

During the wedding reception, I gave the coordinator Php10,000 for his services. The contract stipulates that the amount to be given during the reception is Php25,000 but because I was so disgusted by the results of the pre-nup shoot and the delay of the delivery that I decided to give him a taste of his own medicine. Gen, my coordinator, then approached me after the wedding program saying that Val is having an issue with the amount he was given. So I talked to Val, and he was already furious, I mean he is almost screaming at me! He said that I should not have done that, to which I admit was my fault, and claimed that I should have informed him. He even pointed out the payment sheet and said that I paid more to the photographers than to him, and it was an insult to his talents. And I quote:

“Bakit yung mga photographers mo ang laki ng binayad mo tapos sa akin eto lang? Insulto naman yan sa sa akin!”

I mean, WTH!? Why in the world should he compare the amount paid for this services to that of the photographers? Does he have the right to do that? It was very, very unprofessional of him to say that. And I laughed when those words came out from his mouth because he was acting like a child whose candy was stolen by a bigger boy. My answer to his question?

“Eh sila Jayson yan eh.”

It was later that night when I realized that those words added more injury to the insult. Ahahahaha!

Anyway, going back to the story. I asked Val to wait since we have to go to Yellow Coco and check out the rooms. When we came back, he was gone, and he left the money to Gen. I asked Gen if he left the SDE and wedding video, Gen said she did not receive any DVD from Val. So I took the money, and texted Val to ask where they are so I can give the agreed payment (Php25k). At around 10pm, he texted back and said they were already in Manila.

Part 2
.

Monday after the wedding, November 8th. I texted Val and asked if we can get the SDE and wedding entrance DVD in exchange for the Php25k payment. He claimed that he will not give the DVD’s unless we pay the full amount. Because I lack trust in him, I refused to pay him without getting anything in return, so I said that I can wait for the SDE and I will only pay him the full amount if he will give the full set of video coverage. That’s only fair trade, right? So he agreed to give all the DVD’s in exchange for the full payment. We met next Wednesday, November 10th, and we handed him the full amount. We gave three DVD’s: (1) DVD containing the pre-nup photos (should have been called post-nup photos), (2) copies of the SDE, AVP and 30-minute highlights, all combined in a DVD with menu. I asked for the full coverage video because the contract stipulates that we will get the full wedding coverage.

He said that all the wedding coverage files are over 80Gb in size so we have to give him an external drive to copy all those files. He even showed us the files in a directory, and they look like a bunch of 20-second videos. So we said yes to his stupid idea, not realizing that we were, once again, fooled by this scammer to think that he does not have to put all those files together because we can do it for him. Realizing this mistake, I texted him and asked him if he can combine all those mini-videos into one film that we can watch. He agreed and said that he will give it to us, including the wedding entrance video.

Then two weeks of texting and calling him followed, to which I have not received a response. I even remembered call his number more than ten times without getting an answer, not even a text back. I kept on asking when we will get the remaining sets of DVD’s but he refused to reply to our texts. It was then when we talked to our auntie who is a lawyer to help us with our trouble with Val. Yes, this is already so serious that a lawyer is already involved.

Part 3.

November 22nd, Val called Marc and said that he is ready to turn over the remaining items, I guessed that auntie must have contacted him and asked him to give the videos. The funny thing is he mentioned that he will only meet with Marc, and not me. I wondered why? Maybe he does not want to deal with me anymore because I kept nagging him about the DVD’s? Or maybe something else. I don’t care. So, Marc agreed to meet him on November 26th, the same day that we will be leaving for Malaysia for our honeymoon. Marc said that he will meet Val at 10am. Unfortunately, Marc had to be with his parents so he was not able to meet Val. Again, the delinquent Val texted Marc at around 1pm, the same day, asking him “when and where” to meet. Marc was not able to text back because we were already on our way to the airport. Why did he text at 1pm when he should be texting before 10am if he is serious to meet with Marc?

Part 4.

December 4th. We texted Val to follow up on the long delayed delivery of the DVD’s. He replied (we were using Marc’s phone) that he will send it thru LBC because he is already too busy to meet us. I replied back, sarcastically saying “Sorry at naaabala ka naming mga nagbayad mong kliyente.” No replies followed. He should have gathered his nerves to meet us personally so he can at least try to redeem himself by explaining the cause of the delays, but no. He chose to remain hidden, like a scammer does.

Part 5.

After talking to our lawyer auntie again, we agreed to send a demand letter to Val’s home address through her, this was December 6th. I mentioned to Marc that this cannot go on any further and if we need to file a lawsuit against Val, I am willing to do so because I refuse to let someone get away with something like this. December 11th, we received an LBC package from a certain Tony Montanilla. Too bad, we have to proceed with our lawsuit because the first DVD is corrupted, and the package does not contain the wedding entrance video. I also made a quick run through of the DVD’s and found out that he took the RAW coverage literally, I can hear him barking orders from the background, and we were supposed to hear that while we are watching. I don’t think he even took time to mute the unwanted background sounds.

To be continued…..

Package Price: Php20,000 (Bridal Gown) + Php10,000 (Tuxedo)

my wedding gown as sketched by von lazaro of carmen lazaro couture

my wedding gown as sketched by von lazaro of carmen lazaro couture

The Good

I love my gown and Marc’s tuxedo. Although, I should mention that the design of the gown is close, not exactly, to what was sketched by Von. The fabrics used on the gown (ivory mikado silk) and tuxedo (armani) are of good quality, plus it was very pleasant dealing with Von and Gary. Compared to other designers, their house of couture offers very reasonable price and well within our set budget.

We also really appreciate it when Von agreed to make hubby’s tux even when they are already booked, big plus for Von.

The Bad

During the second and last fitting, I asked Von and Gary if the pleated fabric for the ribbon, as drawn in the sketch, is going to be added later on, and they both confirmed that the pleated fabric is going to be there. When I received the gown, there was none. I really liked the idea of the pleats adding texture to the gown’s ribbons to further intensify the kimono-effect, but too bad, they took that detail away. And besides, it was in the sketch so it should have been there when the gown was handed-over.

The Ugly

The petticoat provided was thinner than what I wore during the fittings. The negative effect was the length of the skirt became longer, so it was really difficult to walk when I keep stepping on the hems of the gown, it was very evident in the wedding videos. Even the photographers and make-up artist kept joking about me falling down on my face because they can notice that it was really hard not to step on the gown. I can’t help but think about what went wrong with it, then I realized that it was the petticoat. *sigh*

Hubby also complained about his vest being too tight, and I also noticed it because I can see that the vest is almost bursting at the front when he removes his jacket.

Hair and Make Up Artist: Victoria Gonzalez of Victoria.ph

Package Deal: Airbrush Make-up for Bride + 2 Traditional Makeup + Free Prenup Make-Up
Package Price: Php18,000 (includes Out of Town charge)

The Good

I fondly call her Ms. Vic and she is the sweetest make-up artist. She makes me calm when I’m starting to get the jitters, and she does wonders with her airbrush. I specifically ask her to make my make-up a “no make-up” look because we had a morning wedding, and she did. When I ask people around me how I look with my make-up, they keep telling me that it is still okay and does not look yucky, and that is a good sign. I always steer away from make-up because: 1) it’s really not my thing, and 2) I have this phobia of looking like a kabuki warrior in photos. I mean, I want to be proud of our wedding pictures and not hide them and so I said that I will not get a cheap make-up artist. Ms. Vic is definitely a treasure.

I also remember her trying to calm me down before the bridal march because I kept crying and she keeps retouching. I can feel Ms. Vic’s panic when I started crying buckets because the tears just won’t stop and the make-up might get ruined. Despite all the tears and sweat, the make-up stayed on. I just need to use lots of oil blotters to keep the shine away.

The Bad

She forgot to take the names of the ladies who had their make-up done. I wish I had their names para nasingil ko sila. *JOKE!*

I also noticed that she has a limited shades of foundation – or maybe I just did not see them. Anyway, what do I know about makeups? And the lady who was doing my hair needs to research more on hairstyles because she keeps asking me what hairstyle I want. Like I said, I am not really the person who likes to experiment with hairstyles, so I think I told her to just tie my hair into a pony. A hairstylist (here comes my unsolicited advice) should get to know the bride more and the dress she is going to wear to have an idea of the hairstyle that will go perfectly with the whole outfit.

The Ugly

None.

PostHeaderIcon [Supplier] Gen Lee Events

Wedding Coordinator: Gen Lee Events

Package Deal: On-the-Day Coordination + Emcee
Package Price: Php14,250 + Php3,500 for the emcee

The Good

A little side story first. Most soon-to-wed couples are unsure whether they should book coordinators for their wedding. For one, that will depend on you and your husband-to-be’s current situation. Are you both working locally or abroad? Do one of you belong in a large family where you can ask relatives to help you? Do you plan to be a hands-on bride or more of a easy-going type? Do you plan to do a lot of DIY’s? These are just a few of the questions that you should ask yourself if you are unsure whether to get a coordinator or not.

For us, we chose to get a coordinator but we chose to book a On-the-Day coordination only. This means that we will have to book all of our suppliers and do all of our DIY’s. The coordinators will assist in coordinating stuff during the wedding day only.

We decided to book Gen Lee because we felt at ease when talking to her and she gave a nice price because we booked during bridal fair. The price she gave fits easily on our budget and it seems that she knows what she’s doing. That’s a good sign.

Anyway, the good thing about her is she is organized and makes sure that she lists everything. I knew because they kept calling my brothers (who were late to arrive at the church) before the bridal march. Unfortunately, the bridal march still continued without my brothers but can’t blame her because like she iterated to me again and again, whether the entourage is complete or not, the wedding will start on time. Oh well.

I can also see that she has a strong background in organizing weddings and she does not mind the early wedding. I also liked it when she agreed to receive the flowers from Dylan that was delivered to her home at 1:30 in the morning, the day of the wedding. Big plus for Gen.

I also like KD and Dawn, who kept spoiling me on our wedding day. Dawn was so kind to help me with my gown when I had to pee and mind you, it was difficult with all that petticoat. I also mentioned to them that I just had my teeth bleached so I can’t eat anything with color and so Dawn brought my mayo sandwich from the preps venue to the chuch then to the reception. And KD. KD should have her own parlor because she fixed my hair in an instant during the reception. She kept saying that she is bothered by those loose strands of hair so she removed all the pins and tied my hair neatly in a bun. Amazing! :)

Their team also helped me with the rice and petal shower stuff because I forgot to cut the paper cone the night before (read the Rosemont Garden horror story here). I really appreciate that gesture. Plus, Macy took care of Liane during the reception. She brought a piece of the styro so Liane can have her water and lunch too. Really sweet girl.

The Bad

I can’t figure out how to put this, but I was kind of disappointed with the emcee, Macy. Don’t get me wrong – I love Macy because we share the same passion with dogs. I am not exactly sure what happened to her but she keeps on stammering. Nervous? I don’t know.

Somehow, when we arrived at the reception, I was expecting that they will encourage the guests to keep clapping their hands while we’re making our way in. No one was clapping, everyone just stared at us while we were doing our grand entrance. It. Felt. Awkward. I just wished that she asked the guests for a round of applause during our march. Oh well.

I also noticed that there are time that Gen tends to reply late – sometimes not at all – to my texts. And I am not the only one who noticed that. Maybe Gen could be a little attentive to her brides, even if they are makulit sa text.

The Ugly

When the guests started leaving during the reception (yes, during), I was hoping that their team could talk to the guests and ask them if they can stay a little longer, just enough to finish the program. Alam nyo naman sa kultura ng mga Pinoy, pag may isang gumawa, lahat gagaya. Then tables after tables of guests started standing up and leaving. How I wished that they could have done something about it. I literally have to leave the stage and approach the leaving guests to stay a bit longer kasi the games are not yet over, and some of the participants are already leaving. Sayang naman di ba? In a few minutes, the program will be over naman kasi the games are at the last part of the program, so sana inawat man lang nila yung mga guests. I’m not blaming them, I just hoped na sana they did something about the guests leaving kasi konti na lang tapos na yung program. Di tuloy narinig ng ibang guests yung thank you message namin.

Warning! Out of Topic Rant: Sana, mabago sa kultura ng mga Pilipino yung ugali when it comes to attending events like weddings and birthday parties – yung tipong kakain lang tapos aalis na kahit di pa tapos yung program. It is not polite and it will never be.

One more thing: Two days after the wedding, I texted Gen because there is something that I need to know that happened during the reception. Didn’t get a reply. Maybe because the communication ended together with the contract. After all, we are just in a vendor-customer relationship and nothing more.

Package Deal: (9) Hand-tied Bouquets, (10)Chest Corsages, (18) Boutonnières, (3) Pomanders, (3) Baskets, (3) Crowns, (2) Flower Pillows, (2) Hair Flowers
Package Price: Php16,000+

The Good

I love Dylan! He is not just a supplier, he also gives advice which flowers to choose. Even the thing about drapes, I followed his advice not to get them. He is open to your suggestion, but will not keep mum of his opinion. I like that attitude in suppliers because I believe that two brains are better than one.

Now, the bouquet. I love it. He made better ones but I really don’t care. It’s MY bouquet. It’s pink and gorgeous, just the way I like it. If you must ask, it is made of pink cymbidiums and wax flowers tied with lace and brooch. We initially thought of having wax flowers only for the bouquet, to reflect our cherry blossom theme but I asked Dylan to add one more flower and he did. How I wished that I preserved it before it turned brown. :(

I also love the little hand-tied flowers of the ladies, and corsages of the ninangs. Most of all, I love Marc’s boutonnière because it goes well with his suit. Wait, can I just say I love all the flowers that arrived Saturday morning?

The Bad

I don’t know. I can’t think of anything nasty. Guess that’s what happens when you love someone. :)

The Ugly

Nothing.

PostHeaderIcon [Supplier] RCJC Flower Shop

Church Stylist: RCJC Flower Shop

Package Deal: Aisle arrangement made of Baby’s Breath and Luminaries with candles; Candle arrangement with Baby’s Breath, candles included. Offertory basket and red carpet is free.
Package Price: Php7,000

The Good

RCJC Flower Shop is located in Mendez so if you have a Tagaytay wedding, you don’t have to worry about extra charges. Ms. Cora is very easy to talk to and she replies to my texts in a timely manner so that is a big plus.

The Bad

The price for the luminaries and flower arrangement was quite out of my budget considering that Baby’s breath are known to be cheap flowers. But according to Ms. Cora, Baby’s breath supply is low during first week of November (All Saint’s Day) and that is the reason for the expensive arrangement. I would not want any other flowers for the aisle, Caleruega is already beautiful, and I don’t want to let go of the luminaries either so I accepted the price. Somehow I was expecting the aisle arrangement to be filled with the little blooms but what I saw is close to a Baby’s Breath Cloud bouquet. Too little for an aisle arrangement. I don’t know, guess my expectation was too high.

The Ugly

Ms. Cora must have forgotten the tulle aisle runner.

String Trio and Vocalist: Leggiero Strings

Package Deal: String Trio and Vocalist composed of 2 Violins, 1 Piano and 1 Female Vocalist. Church and Reception Performance.
Package Price: Php18,000 (Bridal Fair Booking, Out of Town Charge included)
Marc Borlas and Rai Ricafrente Nuptials Song List

The Good

This is the one supplier that we can simply take off the list but I insisted that we get one. Can’t live with it, can’t live without it, I should say. The strings will make the best out of your ceremony ambiance, and I feel that a small chapel like Caleruega, having a string quartet will surely make the ceremony more intimate.

Our contact person with Leggiero Strings is Ms. Merlie Yapchulay, and we find her very nice and accommodating. We booked them during bridal fair so she gave us nice discount from the actual price. We initially wanted Manila Philharmonic Orchestra but their prices are so out of our budget.

But that isn’t the best part.

You see, we got a nice surprise after the wedding ceremony because during the chapel pictorials, we heard a male voice singing from the loft, and when we turned to see, it was Boyet Magno, a colleague of mine. Apparently, Boyet is friends with our quartet singer so we had an instant duet. ‘Twas a nice suprise indeed.

The Bad

They had limited song performance during the ceremony. I remembered that Fr. Allen was looking at the quartet during the Agnus Dei and I think he was waiting for them to sing “Lamb of God”. The song was not included in their repertoire so it is not sung. Also the “Amen” at the end of the Eucharistic Prayer was not included so I guess if you want those prayers to be sung, discuss it with Ms. Merlie.

The Ugly

I noticed that a little after the pictorials, the bridal recessional song was already being played. I expected that they will play it while we are walking out of the chapel but we are still inside when I heard the song. When it was time for the actual march, the chapel was in full silence because the quartet left early. I guess they were in a hurry because I heard from someone they got another wedding after ours.

Aside from that, during the bridal fair when we reserved them, I thought that we are going to have 1 violin, 1 piano and 1 cello for the ensemble. Three days before the wedding, Ms. Merlie called to say that we cannot have the cello and should have 2 violins instead. I forgot the reason but I guess there’s nothing I could do about it that time. Oh, well.

Bridal Shoes: Perfect Match Shoes

Package Deal: 1 pair customized bridal shoes with 3-inch heels; Fabric was provided to match the wedding dress.
Package Price: Php3,750

The Good

Ms. Mari is very nice and easy to deal with. No problems with the design, she followed the design that was provided to her. And the shoes can be re-used again because the design goes well with most dress designs, I think.

The Bad

Limited heel choices and a tad expensive for the simple design that I provided. That, and she forgot to mention that she needs 60-width fabric, I initially provided 45-width and so we have to give another 1/4 yard of the fabric. But no big of a deal.

PostHeaderIcon [Supplier] Joy San Gabriel

Wedding Cake and Cupcakes: Joy San Gabriel

Package Deal: 1 pc. 6″ Fondant Wedding Cake for cutting, 160 pcs. cheesecake cupcakes (mango, blueberry, strawberry flavors); Cake toppers provided by the couple
Package Price: Php6,500 for cutting cake + Php70/pc for cupcake + Php10/pc cupcake container + Php5,000 deposit for the cake stand

The Good

Ms. Joy is very easy to talk to and she can handle your request well. We had several cake tasting (yes, several) and we think that her cakes are consistent that is why we booked her. We love the cheesecakes the most, and if we see her in bridal fairs, I always drop by to grab a couple of pieces. She offers advice if you are unsure with your cake design, and she also makes sure that you get the most out of your budget. Example, we want our guests to be able to takeout their cupcakes if they choose not to eat it during reception so we asked Ms. Joy to include 160 pieces of the containers. She advised that the containers will go to waste if the guests decide to eat them right away, so she told us to just provide the containers if the guests request for one. We can then return the unused containers to her, and pay only for those that were used. Smart and economical.

The cake design is also not too bad, we just want a simple cherry blossom cake so I don’t think it is too difficult to do. And methinks that a cake should be delicious first, the looks come in second.

The Bad

Ms. Joy sometimes have a tendency to forget to reply to your texts so it is better to call her.

The Ugly

Nothing ugly to say about her and her cakes.

W@W Couples

I am so grateful that I learned so much about weddings by joining Weddings at Work (a.k.a W@W) e-group. And as an act of paying it forward, I am proud to announce fellow W@W couples who shared their experiences, rants and grunts and success stories with the group. Cheers to all W@W couples!
